Monet's Water Lilies
This Master Artist lesson gives students the opportunity to view and discuss Claude Monet's Impressionist paintings depicting his famous Water Lilies! They examine his use of color and brushstroke technique, and then use our special liquid watercolors and sponge brushes to create their own masterpieces. The final touch is to cut out and glue their own lily pads!
Monet Adult & Parent Art Education Tip:
When your child brings home his or her painting of Monet's Water Lilies, discuss the project with him or her by asking open-ended questions. Here are some examples with language that will help increase your child's self-confidence and self-esteem:
- "Tell me about your painting."
- "How did you make all these different colors in the water?"

Van Gogh's Sunflowers
In this Master Artist lesson, students not only get to touch and feel real sunflowers, but for many it is the first time they get to paint using a palette-spreader. Thick paint, bold hues, and lots of imagination take the students on a journey through Van Gogh's fanastic world of color.
Van Gogh Adult & Parent Art Education Tip:
Ask your child...
- "Tell me the story about your painting."
- "What does the thick paint feel like?"
Make statements that point out color, texture, line or shape:
- "Look at your green next to the yellow!"
- "What a great shape that is," or "I like that shape."

In the Garden with Georgia O'Keefe
In this lesson, we focus on big flowers that take up the entire canvas, and introduce the concept of background color. Students examine books and prints of O'Keefe's artwork, and interpret and create their own giant flowers. Fuchsia, orange, purple, turquoise, red... It's just the beginning!
O'Keefe Adult & Parent Art Education Tip:
Ask your child...
- "Tell me how you made these brushstrokes."
- "Tell me about the colors you chose."
